'Guy Sebastian's Platinum Dud'
Undercover Music News - March 4th, 2004
The record industry has another platinum embarrassment on it's hands. After
awarding Guy Sebastian's 'All I Need Is You' platinum last week, the single
hasn't even sold Gold.
Platinum in Australia is 70,000 units. Gold is 35,000. 'All I Need Is You' has
sold around 26,000 units to date after debuting last week with 16,763 sales and
9,364 this week.
While the marketing machine was successful in pushing the Sebastian single to
number one in the first week, this week the title has dropped to No. 3, with
Jamelia's 'Superstar' taking premium placement on the ARIA chart.
The award system in Australia is based on units shipped into stores from record
company warehouses. It is not based on actual sales.
According to ARIA, there is no reconciliation system in place for the cancelling
of an award if sales don't eventually achieve the intended sales status.
There were two debuts in the singles chart this week. Kylie Minogue's second
single from Body Language 'Red Blooded Woman' came in at No. 4 and George
Michael's return to Sony with 'Amazing' debuted at No 8.
Slim Dusty had the biggest album debut. His final album 'Columbia Lane' entered
at No. 5. The 'Queer Eye For A Straight Guy' album (featuring Jamelia's
'Superstar') debuted at No. 8.
