'Aussie Idol Stars Ex: I Still Love Guy'

Woman's Day - Di Stanley - November, 2003

Guy Sebastian and Julie Egan made beautiful music together. One day she hopes they will do that again.

Julie Egan, or Jules as Australian Idol finalist Guy Sebastian, 22, affectionately calls her, is the number-one fan of the sexy, supremely talented Malaysian-born vocal teacher, and despite his time in the Idol house, she still remains his closest confidante. Although it has been a year since Julie called an end to their relationship she says the depth of feeling the pair share hasn't changed at all. "We're best friends and we love each other heaps," the pretty 24-year- old happily tells Woman's Day.

"I still love him and he's always reassuring me he still loves me, and everything's cool. We're a really big part of each others lives."

Jules, who auditioned for Idol with Guy, only to fall away in the early rounds, met him 10 years ago through their families' association with the Assemblies of God Paradise Community Church in Adelaide.

Their voices were a match made in heaven and five years ago they teamed up to sing a duet, Mariah Carey's Whenever You Call, at a friends wedding. Their lives have been intertwined ever since.

"Guy came over to the house for rehearsal and from that day we've seen each other or talked to each other every day, regardless. We've just been inseparable," says Jules, who takes the credit for advising Guy to sing the show stopper, Climb Every Mountain, and Beyonce's Crazy In Love.

"We were best friends for a year before we started going out. Guy and I were reminiscing the other day about all the silly things we used to do, as well as the normal stuff like going to movies and out to dinner.

"When we first broke up, it wasn't a big fall-out or nasty, it was just better for us to be apart. Break-ups are always yucky, but after a couple of months we were able to bear each others company again and talked things out. We're probably closer now than we have ever been."

Guy turned to Jules when he realised he would have to give up his 35 singing students at the Gleeson, Bethesda and Temple Christian colleges to enter the Idol house and take his shot at stardom. To Jules, the "gift" of taking over his livelihood was the career break she had been looking for, and one typical of Guy's generosity. She says the Guy she knows is humble, a practical joker, has a loving spirit and isn't afraid of experimenting with his hairstyle (surprise, surprise!), wether he be bald or sporting the 'fro.

"He's good-looking with a nice body and he's so funny. Guy's always making people laugh," says Jules proudly.

"His voice is faultless. I've never heard a talent like his. He still makes me cry happy tears when he sings. Guy has had his faith his whole life and his singing is a gift from God that he has been given the opportunity to share....I'd love him to win."

Is it possible they may ever rekindle their romance?

"I'd love to answer that but I have no idea," says Jules honestly. "Guy's life has been turned upside down, so it's a bit of a crazy time to be thinking about relationships, because he will move away from Adelaide.

"Maybe once this Idol mania settles down we'll talk about it. We're not boyfriend and girlfriend anymore, but best friends. He's definitely special. What's not to love?"
